AI citation tracking

When an AI answer names your brand, a second question follows: which pages did the answer rely on? AI citation tracking records the sources that answers show, separates your own site from third-party sources, and keeps each observation dated.

What an AI citation is

A citation is a source an AI answer links to or lists next to its text. Some engines show sources for most answers, some only for some answers, and some rarely. Citation tracking only measures what the engine actually exposes; it does not guess at sources an answer did not show.

A mention and a citation are different events. An answer can name a brand without citing it, and it can cite a brand's page while recommending a competitor.

Owned and earned sources

Split cited sources into two groups, because they call for different work:

  • Owned sources: pages on the brand's own domain, such as product, pricing, documentation and guides.
  • Earned sources: third-party pages, such as reviews, comparisons, directories, forums and press.
  • Competitor-owned sources: a competitor's own pages, which often explain why that competitor is recommended.

What to measure

Keep citation signals next to, not inside, other metrics:

  • Owned-Site Citation Coverage: of the valid observations where citation evidence is available, how many cite the tracked brand's own domain.
  • Cited domains and URLs: which sources appear, how often, and for which prompts and engines.
  • Mention without citation: answers that name the brand but cite only third-party or competitor pages.
  • AI Share of Voice stays a separate metric: the brand's share of valid mentions against a defined competitor set.

Measure on a comparable scope

Compare the same prompt set, market, language and measurement window. If an engine shows no sources for an answer, that observation has no citation evidence; it is not counted as an uncited answer. A refusal or a failed request is recorded as its own state, never as a visibility zero.

Turning citations into GEO work

Citation evidence tells you where to act:

  • If answers cite third-party pages that describe you inaccurately, correct the source or publish a clearer owned page.
  • If answers cite competitor pages for a topic, check whether you have an answer-first page on that topic at all.
  • If your own pages are never cited, check crawler access, page clarity and whether the facts are stated plainly with dates.

How SOV Tracker tracks citations

SOV Tracker stores the dated answer and any sources the engine returned for each tracked prompt. Paid plans measure ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, with the full tracked set measured weekly. Citation evidence depends on what each engine exposes. The Free scan is ChatGPT only and is a Discovery baseline, not citation monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

Do all AI engines show their sources?

No. Source display varies by engine and by answer. Citation metrics only use observations where the engine exposed source evidence.

Is a mention without a citation a bad result?

Not by itself. It means the answer named the brand but did not show your page as a source. Track it separately so you can see whether owned pages are being used.

Is citation tracking the same as AI referral traffic?

No. Citations are what the answer shows; referral traffic is who clicks through to your site. They are related but measured separately.

Can the Free scan track citations?

No. The Free scan is ChatGPT only, with five automatically generated non-branded prompts, and reports Discovery Visibility. Citation evidence is stored in paid tracked measurements.

Start with a dated baseline

Run the Free scan for a ChatGPT Discovery baseline. Paid plans add tracked prompts, configured competitors, stored answer and source evidence, and weekly measurement across all five engines.
