How SOV Tracker measures AI visibility
Every scan is a dated sample of real returned answers, not a permanent ranking. Raw SOV is a pure competitor-relative mention share and is not weighted by engine market share or prominence. Discovery, recommendation, citation, sentiment, prominence and accuracy remain separate evidence-backed metrics.
Revision 2026-10-18
What we measure
Each metric answers one question. We do not blend them into a generic composite.
AI Share of Voice (SOV Score)
Your share of valid mentions within the competitor set you configured, shown as a percentage (for example 28%). It is a share, not a 0–100 grade, and it is measured only when the comparison universe and scope are valid.
Discovery Visibility
Among eligible answered responses from non-branded discovery questions, the share where the target brand appears without being inserted into the question.
Recommendation Rate
On questions labeled in advance as recommendation or purchase-choice questions, the share of answers that explicitly recommend the brand. Being mentioned is not the same as being recommended.
Owned-Site Citation Coverage
Among valid answers whose citation evidence was captured, the share that cite the brand's own verified site. Among valid answers, only engines that do not support citation evidence and answers whose citation evidence could not be captured are left out of the denominator; they are not counted as zero. An answer with captured citation evidence that does not cite the brand's site stays in the denominator as a miss.
Sentiment
Positive, neutral or negative tone, measured only on answers that mention the brand. The current version is a rule-based context check, not an LLM judgement.
Prominence
Where the first valid brand mention appears inside the returned answer, from early (1) to late (10). If the brand is not mentioned, prominence does not apply; it is not zero. It is not blended into SOV or Discovery Visibility.
Brand Accuracy
Whether facts the answer states about the brand match the brand facts the customer has verified. Without verified brand facts no accuracy score is shown.
AI Site Readiness
A separate site diagnostic covering entity/schema and documented bot-access signals. It is not part of the visibility metrics above.
AI Share of Voice calculation
For the configured target brand and competitor set, SOV Tracker counts valid occurrences in the returned answer. Raw SOV is the target brand's valid mention count divided by total valid mentions across that comparison set, rounded to a percentage. No position or prominence bonus is part of Share of Voice. Raw SOV is not weighted by engine market share, question popularity, or question volume. Mentions are added up across all answers in the period first and divided once; SOV is not an average of per-answer percentages.
If no valid competitor comparison universe exists, SOV is unmeasured (null), not manufactured as 0% or 100%.
SOV is calculated inside one measurement scope: one brand, one country, one language and, where set, one place, sales channel (store or online) or branch. Results from different scopes or different companies are never blended into one SOV percentage.
Discovery Visibility and Prominence
Discovery Visibility is calculated from eligible answered responses to non-branded questions: how often the target brand appears without being named in the question.
Prominence is separate. It describes where the first valid mention appears inside a returned answer; it does not change SOV or Discovery Visibility.
SOV formula with a worked example
SOV = valid mentions of the target brand ÷ (valid mentions of the target brand + valid mentions of every configured competitor) × 100, rounded to a whole percent.
Illustrative example: in one weekly measurement the answers name the target brand 6 times, competitor A 9 times and competitor B 5 times. SOV = 6 ÷ (6 + 9 + 5) = 6 ÷ 20 = 30%. Names outside the configured competitor set are not added to the denominator.
- Valid answers came back, a competitor set exists and competitors were named but the target brand never was: SOV is a measured 0%. If no brand in the set was named (0/0), SOV is not measured.
- No competitor set is defined, or no valid answer came back: SOV is not measured and no number is shown.
- SOV is a share inside one scope. 30% in one country and language cannot be added to or averaged with a result from another scope.
When SOV is measured
- Paid plans measure every tracked question on five engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. The official SOV comes from the weekly measurement, in which all five engines are asked within the same window.
- An engine counts as healthy for the week when at least 95% of its scheduled questions were measured. With 5 of 5 healthy engines SOV is complete; with 3 or 4 it is shown as partial with the engine count (for example "partial · 4/5 engines"); with fewer than 3 SOV is not shown for that week.
- Daily priority checks on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are an early signal. They are shown separately and never mixed into the weekly SOV.
- Changing a question's wording or the competitor set creates a new version. A week-to-week change is shown only when both weeks were measured with the same question set, competitor set, scope (market, language, branches/products and verified brand spellings), engine configuration and Measurement Contract, and all 5 engines were healthy in both weeks. Otherwise the change is hidden and the reason is shown.
Invalid answers are not zero
Every engine attempt gets one state: answered, no AI answer (for example Google showed no AI Overview), refused, or not measured (provider error, timeout, technical failure). Only answered responses enter the denominator of answer-based metrics. The other states are not counted as 0%.
If no valid answer came back, or no competitor set is defined, the metric is shown as not measured rather than given a number. Failed attempts still appear in the coverage figures, so a gap stays visible instead of being hidden.
Sampling and aggregation
Sampling: in the weekly measurement each tracked question is asked once on each engine, so a week holds one answer per question and engine. One answer is one observation; AI answers can change from run to run, which is why a week is compared only with earlier compatible weeks.
Aggregation: SOV is pooled. Within a single measurement scope and on healthy engines only, on non-branded questions, valid mentions of the brand and of each configured competitor are first added up across every answered response in the window (all questions and engines), then divided once. It is not an average of per-answer or per-question percentages. Discovery Visibility and the other rates are likewise counted over all eligible answers in the window.
The free scan is a smaller sample
The free scan asks ChatGPT only, with 5 automatically generated questions that do not contain the brand name. It can run once every 30 days for the same business.
Its headline number is Discovery Visibility: in how many of the answered questions the brand appeared. It is not the SOV Score, which needs a configured competitor set and the weekly five-engine measurement.
Because the free scan's ChatGPT measurement does not return citation evidence, its citation and owned-site citation rates are not measured.
Each of the 5 questions is asked once. If fewer than 3 usable answers come back, the scorecard shows a low-sample warning and the result should be read as directional.
Citation evidence
Some providers expose structured citation or grounding fields; when they do, those URLs are used as evidence. URLs written inside the answer text may also be kept for reference, but they are not counted as engine citations in Owned-Site Citation Coverage. That metric's denominator excludes only engines that do not support citation evidence and answers whose evidence could not be captured; an answer with captured evidence that does not cite the brand's site is counted as a miss, not dropped.
A citation means a URL was observed in the evidence available to the scan. It does not automatically mean the brand was recommended or reveal the provider's hidden retrieval pool.
No citation evidence ≠ no source
- No citation evidence: the engine does not return structured source data (ChatGPT, Claude) or no answer was received. The answer stays out of the denominator; it is not counted as zero.
- No source: an engine that returns source data (Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) answered but cited no URL. The answer stays in the denominator and counts as a miss.
2026-10-15: the owned-site citation denominator is the answered responses from engines that return citation evidence; an answer that shows no source counts as a miss. Scorecards created before this date are shown recalculated under this rule.
What we do not claim to measure
Original research rule
SOV Tracker will not publish benchmark findings until the underlying dataset has a declared question set, engine list, geography/locale, date range, sampling rule, failure handling, metric definitions and a reproducible artifact. A study design is not a result.
When a benchmark is released, this page is the measurement contract it must link back to; study-specific deviations must be disclosed beside the result.
